Girl About Town, Worldette’s sassy and no nonsense agony aunt, answers your travel concerns. But watch out! Ask a silly question and our girl, who knows how to travel in style, might bite…

Dear Girl About Town,
To lift or leave? I’ve been traveling a lot for work recently and it seems to be a compulsion; lifting the toiletries (shampoo, body wash, toothbrushes) from each room that I stay in. I end up with a bathroom at home filled with them, they leak in my bag and I have so many tiny little bottles and different brands under the sink I could open my own shop. Isn’t it my right as the paying customer to enjoy all these little perks?

Dear Hair-care Hoarder,
In this day and age of recycling, shame on you for taking another unnecessary plastic bottle. For every one you take, the hotel must replace, perpetuating a never-ending cycle of plastic production and waste.

For all the effort to drag home the mini shampoo (often less than 100ml), you could save the space and weight and get yourself something luxurious at home. And, I would start to wonder, if you can stay in a hotel, surely you can afford your own bottle of shampoo at home.

It’s also not helping your looks: many of the hotel shampoos use the same generic (and possibly cheap) brands. Green hotels are starting to use refillable bottles in the bathrooms – if you stay somewhere that does, please encourage them to keep this practice up.

For now, I’ll leave you with this challenge: use up ALL the small bottles that you currently have stashed at home. I bet it will take a year to work your way through everything. Happy bathing!
