Peru Hotel: Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge

Written by Amy Huang, 209 days ago, 0 Comments

Staying at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge is to stay at the archeological park itself.  Amy Huang gives us some tips about the Lodge.

Instead of just getting the train to visit the magnificent Machu Picchu for the day, how would you like to stay in the archeological park itself?

Peru’s biggest tourism draw card can now be visited just a few steps away from your own hotel room, and a stay at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge might just be the experience you are looking for.

Why we love it: It is like being in a sacred retreat with the World Heritage listed Machu Picchu right at your door step. Being so close to the wonder has its benefits, as you are able to enjoy the grounds of Machu Picchu before the arrival and after the departure of day visitors to the site (on most days).

And while you wait for the attraction to clear, you can sit out on the terrace, take a stroll in the gardens, soaking the mountain scenery and enjoy delightful Peruvian cuisine, made from produce grown onsite; or even enjoy a massage as the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Ambiance and style: There is no doubt the staff at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge wants you to feel at home.

It has a friendly and cozy atmosphere and as the lodge is surrounded by the mountains that enclose the site, you can really connect to nature.

Cost: Rooms cost from US$1180 per night plus taxes, meals included.

Who to go with: For anyone who wants to experience Machu Picchu more than a day trip’s worth.

How long to go for: The Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge is suitable for short- term stays of up to three nights. As much as it is a fantastic location, the inconvenience of being on top of a remote mountain wears off eventually for most travelers.

What the rooms are like: Rooms are slightly smaller than average, but expect an old world charm. Unlike modern stylish hotel rooms, rooms at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge are designed for comfort, and have a rustic feel to them.

It is recommended to book a Mountain View room and wake up to the peaks that surround the Lodge.

Amenities and extras: All meals are included during your stay, which is a fantastic bonus. Massages are available upon request and it is best that you book it as soon as you check in, as it is a popular option for the guests.

Not so hot: It takes a while for your meal to arrive as the hotel tries to cope with everyone trying to eat at the same time. Staff work on ‘Peruvian’ time and things do happen a little slower here.

Take this opportunity to read a book or have a quiet chat, after all you are here on holidays, and the last thing you want is to have to rush around.

It can also get a little annoying being asked “Are you a guest of the lodge?” every time you enter the property. Be assured that this is done with good intentions to keep day trippers out of the lodge.
