Bali Hotel: Viceroy Bali

Written by Rachel Hand, 286 days ago, 1 Comment

The Viceroy, part of the Great Hotels of the World, is a luxury oasis near Ubud, the cultural center of Bali. Rachel Hand enjoyed her visit and shares her experience with us.

Why we love it: A secret tropical hideaway, the Viceroy consists of beautifully designed villas set on a lush green hillside in the Balinese countryside, perfect for a romantic break with that special someone.

Ambiance and style: Traditional and modern Balinese styles combine to create luxurious accommodation. A tranquil atmosphere pervades throughout the hotel and, since the villas are designed with privacy in mind, you might forget that there are any other guests.

Where: Located near Ubud, Bali, a one to two hour drive from Denpasar International Airport. The Viceroy is set in peaceful countryside, built on a hill with views across the valley to lush, green, tropical forest.

The Viceroy operates a free shuttle bus that brings guests to and from nearby Ubud. One of Bali’s cultural centers, Ubud offers a range of music and dance performances at venues throughout the town every night as well as plenty of restaurants and shops.

Cost: Villas start from £332 per night.

Who to go with: This is definitely a destination for couples and would make a perfect honeymoon hotel. It is also suitable for anyone who wants to get away from it all and enjoy complete privacy.

How long to go for: Spend a few days just enjoying the hotel then add more time if you want to take tours around Bali or have days out in Ubud.

What are the rooms like: There are five types of villa ranging in size, each with their own private pool. Cleverly designed bath areas are a central feature of every villa, so you can take your bath while watching the monkeys in the trees on the opposite hillside.

Large, comfortable king-sized beds and plenty of seating options from sofas to daybeds are standard features, while other perks such as an espresso machine in each villa and free mini-bar drinks are welcome extras.

Amenities and extras: An infinity pool next to the restaurant offers fantastic views across the valley and attention to detail such as being served free mineral water when you swim make this hotel that bit more special.

Other facilities include a well equipped gym, a library of books and DVDs and the Lembah Spa. Breakfast is served in the award winning Cascades restaurant, which also offers lunch and dinner menus. The Viceroy Bar is considered one of the finest stocked cocktail venues in Bali.

A boutique sells clothes, souvenirs and jewelry including many Balinese designs. There is a laundry service for guests and even a helipad. Due to the hilly nature of the hotel grounds, set on a hillside, electric buggies operate to take guests around the hotel. If you don’t fancy walking, just call for a buggy which will collect you within minutes.

Not so hot: Having to use the espresso machine to make a cup of tea can get difficult. Also, you wouldn’t want to share a villa with anyone other than your nearest and dearest due to the open bath areas.
