Living my dream in Malaysia

Guest writer Gyscha Rendy works in a resort at Malaysia’s Cherating Beach, where it’s sparkling beaches by day, sequins and feathers by night. She tells us how she made her dream life happen.

Being paid to travel and entertain people in Malaysia? What a dream job! I guess I couldn’t ask for more.

As a young girl, I remember dreaming about doing shows overseas, like in a musical movie: Chicago, Burlesque, or Moulin Rouge, you know, the show girl with big feathers! All I ever wanted was to work with creative people.

So I dreamt it out loud.

I sent out my CV until finally, one company sent me an email and asked me to come for an interview, then voila: success. Dreams do come true!

I accepted the job offer, moved to Malaysia and started working as a dancer on stage in a family beach resort in Cherating Beach, Kuantan.

So how’s life as a showgirl in a tropical resort? A typical day for me starts around 10 am – just another sunny day on Cherating Beach. I love the breeze and the sound of the waves.

Working in a resort, I can spend as much time as I want chilling at the beach. It’s like every day is a holiday.

I’ll often have lunch with my two friends, Loges and Alex at Remboelan restaurant. Good weather, good salad, with great companions.

We wander to the beach, Loges goes sailing with Alex, while I decide to soak up the sun, have cold drinks and read my favorite book by Paulo Coelho. You know, the joys of laziness!

In the afternoon we go back to the hotel to do a little bit of rehearsal before our big show “Formidable tonight. It’s a great feeling to be surrounded by bunch of crazy and passionate people.

My choreographer and costume designer always have things on their minds about our next show, while our set designer acts like a fairy with a magic wand, creating amazing sets for each show. They keep us excited and nervous all the time.

And then…it’s show time!

It takes courage to dream and make it happen. And here we are now, on the center stage. We dance our little hearts out to make them all smile.

There’s always a party after the show. I love being with my team and the people who’ve come to watch us. Their smiles and appreciation for what we’ve done under the spotlights are just one of the reasons to create and achieve more.

Back in my room, talking to my Mum and friends on Skype, keeping them updated with what I’ve been doing so far, I can feel the support, those smiles, those people, my team, the show. Cherating Beach will never fail to make my days perfect.

I’m loving life!

Wow, sounds like an amazing life you have there. Certainly beats working in an office! It would be interesting to know if there was a lot of competition for the job you landed. Presumably, those types of jobs in resorts have a lot of applicants, so you obviously did well to get hired.
