Post holiday blues ruining your life? It could be worse….

Amy Huang has a condition far worse than your usual post holiday blues.

Nearby, planes are landing and taking off in the distance, distracting me from my tasks at hand.

Unable to concentrate, I feel drained, like nothing matters anymore; I’m completely filled with a longing so strong that I start to procrastinate, and my mind drifts from one vacuum to another, waiting for a chance to escape.

I feel depressed.

It has been seven days since returning from my most recent trip, and the desire for more is bubbling deep in me. I don’t want a routine. I don’t want to be home. I don’t care if I had to fly, sail or run; I want to be on the go; I want to live out of my backpack forever.

I nagged my manager for leaves I can take this year, and I have already asked my travel agent for quotes. My husband laughs at my antics, claiming that I am just throwing a tantrum. Yet a bit of research reveals I have a bigger problem than just a tantrum.

There is actually a medical term for what I am going through and it is called Dromomania.

What’s Dromomania?

Dromomania is a term used to describe the compulsive urge to travel as a psychical condition; a condition which I am convinced that I suffer from with great pleasure, although it comes with terrible social side effects.

It’s when holiday periods are over, and most of us are back at our daily routine, that I go through the hardest periods of this condition.

I am unable to feel joy of being reunited with my family and friends, and when everyone else happily talks about their holiday and share wonderful stories, I sit alone in the corner suffering from the withdrawal symptoms of Dromomania.

I start counting the days to the next possible time I can take leave from work, and start researching into possible destinations. I am even willing to have canned soup for my meals and take out a loan to fund my trips.

I believe I am beyond cure.

How to get over the post-holiday blues

Thankfully, there are short term remedies to help me feel better. After consulting with a few fellow travellers, I have found that by constantly writing about my previous trips and to start planning and researching into future trips often helps.

I can certainly do some writing, and it wouldn’t be too soon  to start planning my annual end of year trip for 2012!
