Kate Caroline, one of Worldette’s American writers, tells us about the important work and Let’s Move! initiative of her country’s First Lady, Michelle Obama.

The First Lady’s Initiatives

Today in the United States, one in three children are considered overweight or obese, and if trends continue, this number will rise. An unhealthy weight can lead to problems such as diabetes, heart conditions, and cancer, among others.

It’s a serious issue facing the US today, but fortunately one woman has decided to tackle this problem head-on: First lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama.

In 2010, Mrs Obama launched a comprehensive initiative called Let’s Move! to address the problem of childhood obesity. Let’s Move! works with students, parents, schools, and health and government officials to create change and solve the problem of child obesity within the next generation.

Mrs Obama’s initiative strives to complete this mission by educating parents, caregivers, and children about healthy eating habits; providing healthier food in schools; improving accessibility to healthy food; and augmenting physical activity among kids.

In addition to her principal campaign to fight childhood obesity, Mrs. Obama’s other main public sector focus has been on military members and their families.

Along with Dr. Jill Biden (wife of Vice President Joe Biden), Mrs. Obama created Joining Forces, which helps military personnel and their families find the opportunities and support they need.

Before she became First Lady

Mrs. Obama was born on the South Side of Chicago. She graduated with a degree in sociology from Princeton University and obtained a law degree from Harvard University in 1988. She then began working for a Chicago law firm where she met her future husband, President Barack Obama.

The First Lady is also the mother of two daughters, Malia and Sasha, and has said that she is first and foremost a mother.

The title she has given to her role as First Lady is “Mom-in-Chief.” Her commitment to family and the public is one of the reasons she is admired by so many people.

There are so many reasons why we at Worldette love Michelle Obama. She exudes power, confidence, and intelligence; she’s a hard-working mother and wife; and to top it off, she is quite probably the most beautiful first lady to ever inhabit the White House.

She really does have it all.
