She’s been called the Baddest Woman in all of India, and it’s true. We wouldn’t mess with her! Sampat Pal Devi – founder of the Pink Sari Gang - has more moxie and determination than most.
In the Banda District of Uttar Pradesh, one of the most lawless and poverty-stricken parts of India, Sampat Pal Devi first came to the media’s attention when she controversially beat up a corrupt police officer who was victimizing a member of lower caste society.
We wouldn’t mess with her!
Since then, the 48-year-old mother of 5 who escaped an arranged marriage, and her gang of Gulabi (Pink in Hindi) have continue to fight for the lower castes – and most often this means women and girls subjected to dowries, sexual abuse and rape.
Now with tens of thousands of members across India, the Gulabi Gang helps women regain their dignity by fighting for education, rights and independence – and against corruption and abuse – one day at a time.
Sampat Pal Devi, we salute you.
What other ‘bad’ women do you know about we should we cover?
